Serbia Monasteries

Although Serbia has for centuries been the scene of frequent wars, devastation, fires and mass-migrations, on the turbulent roads leading from East to Europe and from Europe to East, a rich cultural and historical legacy has remained there. The rich variety of historical monuments and sites of natural beauty make Serbia a country of great interest for tourism and very much part of its attraction.

Due to its architectural features, sculptural ornaments, frescoes, icons, handwritten books, numerous works of applied art, the monasteries of Serbia attract the attention of tourists and experts in medieval art. If Serbia is rich in something, then it is in monasteries. In our territory there are as many as 212, of which 54 have the status of cultural monuments, and the Sopoćani, with the Djurdjevi pillars and the church of St. Peter and Paul, Studenica, are listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The monasteries used to represent the ecclesiastical and administrative centers, the patriarch’s offices, the metropolitan and the bishop, but they were also the main institutions of instruction, and not only the prayer places and the guardians of national consciousness. The enemies demolished and burned them, and they were lifted from the ashes again and continued their lives.
