Along the Danube through history
There is no river that better than the Danube depicts all the diversity, complexity, but also the beauty of Serbia. The Danube has always been a very important part of the history of these areas. The second largest river in Europe, for many centuries it was the natural border of Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it was symbolically the line that divided the East and the West.
Following the Danube Valley, since his entry into Serbia towards the east, it is possible to see the remains of the following fortresses: Bac, Petrovaradin, Belgrade, Smederevo, Ram, Golubac and Fetislam. To visit and hear the history, legends and myths of these places, means to know and understand a good part of Serbian history, so we recommend them as places that should not be missed. There are numerous archaeological sites and remains from the Neolithic period, from which we will visit the site of Vinca and Viminacium.
Departure from hotel in Belgrade. You will meet your tour guide around 08.00h. Visit Vinca, archeological Neolith finds near Belgrade. Continuing to Smederevo fortress, a monumental building, the largest built in medieval Serbia, still dominates the city’s profile. The length of the Smederevo ramparts was towards the Danube 550, according to Jezava 400, and towards the land 502 meters. Power towers, 25, 6 in Mala and 19 in the City of Veliko, were distributed along the ramparts. In the Great City there was also a church whose foundations were discovered only in the early eighties of the 20th century. The Smederevo church of St. George, built between 1851 and 1855, is the first in a series of those done by Andrej Damjanov, a Neimar from Veles. The Smederevski orderers of the temple, as well as other notable objects in this city, wanted these buildings to be built on the reputation of Manasija. Damjanov therefore constructs a five-chapel church here, a combination of a basilica-type building with a plan of the church of a developed inscribed cross. Overhead, the high monumental baroque-classic bell tower rises.
Continuation of the road to the Roman camp Viminacium. It was in the middle of the 1st century BC. as the camp of legion VII Claudia, Viminacium had, up to the end of the Empire, often played a crucial role in events significant for his survival. This position is also formalized by the assignment of the status of the municipium, under Hadrianus of the year 117, and the colony, 239th. under Gordian III when he gets the right to mint his local money. During the Dynasty of the North, Viminacium experienced its greatest economic and cultural prosperity. Continue to the Silver Lake. Lunch in restaurant (optionally).
Silver Lake is 3 km away from Veliko Gradiste, and because of its proximity to Belgrade (129 km.) and other cities throughout Serbia, it has become extremely popular for tourists and fishermen. It is 14 km long, with an average width of about 300 m. There used to be a sleeve of the Danube, and now it is closed by two dams. It is rich in fish (catfish, skewer, carp, amur …) and is mentioned in Ginis’s record book because the largest carp weighing about 44 kg was extracted from it.
Continuint trip to Golubac. Walking through the complex of the Golubac fortress is a walk-through time because archaeologists have found the remains of five civilizations in this area. From the end of the Bronze Age 1,000 years before the new era, to the beginning of the 19th century. Back to Belgrade at late afternoon.
